Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity “who are the best AEO experts in 2026” and you will get a list. A short one. It gets shorter every month, because these tools are getting fussier about which sources they cite. If you want your brand named the next time a buyer prompts an answer engine, the fastest path is to learn from the operators who are already being named themselves.
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is not a rebrand of SEO. It is the practice of making a business the answer, not just a link. When Google AI Overviews summarise “best plumber in Manchester” or ChatGPT recommends a Shopify theme, one, two, maybe three brands get named inside that answer. The other 47 pages of blue links might as well not exist. That is the entire problem AEO solves.
We built this list at Marketing the Change because our own clients kept asking the same question: who is actually good at this, and how do we tell the practitioners from the LinkedIn performers. So we sat down, went through the people we follow, cross-referenced published work, active client outcomes and teaching that holds up under scrutiny, and put together the 14 names below. Some are UK-based, some global. All of them ship. None of them are here because we like their thumbnails.
How we chose these 14 AEO experts
Being loud on LinkedIn is not a qualification. We looked for four things: published work you can actually read (blog posts, frameworks, case studies with numbers), real client outcomes that hold up (visible in reviews, testimonials, or public rank data), teaching not just tweeting (they explain the how, they do not just brag about the result), and presence in AI answers (they are being cited by the engines they optimise for). If a name failed on two of those, it is not on the list.

He has built and ranked over a thousand domains as a self-described “digital landlord”, and his FatRank operation is one of the loudest examples of AEO applied to pay-on-results lead generation in the UK.
What makes him worth following is that he publishes the mechanics, not just the wins. Read his FatRank blog and you will find working notes on entity signals, LLM citation patterns and how to structure a lead-gen site so that answer engines route buyers to it. Follow him if you sell into SaaS, tech or marketing, and you are wondering why your site is not getting mentioned in AI answers despite ticking every on-page box. The answer is usually off-page.
David Johnson

He puts it well: “I built LoudCrowd to prove that SEO should create freedom, not frustration.” That is a founder’s line, not a marketer’s line, and it is a good filter for whether an AEO agency understands that the point of ranking is money in the bank, not screenshots on a slide. Local AEO is a different problem from national AEO: proximity, GBP consistency, review velocity and structured local content all matter more than they did in 2022.
Follow him if you run a service business anywhere in the UK where most of your work comes from a 30-mile radius. Local AEO is under-discussed and Mark is one of the few writing about it in useful detail.
Andrew Halliday

Andrew Halliday takes the technical route to ecommerce AEO, which we like because that is where the leverage lives. Site architecture, product schema and structured data are the three things most Shopify and WooCommerce stores get wrong, and they are the three things LLMs most rely on when deciding which store to recommend. Coreter Media’s published work on the topic is the kind of practical, screenshotted teaching we point clients to.
He is worth following if you run an ecommerce brand where the technical foundations are creaky, or if you are an in-house SEO trying to figure out why AI Overviews name a competitor and not you. Nine times out of ten, the answer is in the entity graph, not the copy.
Julian Goldie

He is worth following if you sell in any industry where a buyer’s first search is being intercepted by AI Overviews and where trust signals matter more than clever copy. So what actually is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is the practice of making a business the answer, not just a link. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Google AI Overviews respond to a buyer’s question, they typically name one to three brands inside that answer. AEO is the discipline of being one of those brands.
Practically, that means: strong entity signals (Wikipedia, Wikidata, structured author profiles, consistent NAP), technically clean architecture (schema, semantic HTML, fast pages, crawlable JavaScript), meaningful content that answers questions LLMs actually receive, and enough off-page authority (real mentions, real reviews) that the answer engines trust the source. If SEO is about being findable, AEO is about being trustworthy enough to be quoted.
How Marketing the Change thinks about AEO
At MTC we do not treat AEO as a separate service. We think it is a symptom of getting the fundamentals right. If a WordPress site is fast, cleanly structured, has real schema, real authors, real trust signals, and content that answers questions a customer actually asks, it will show up in AI answers as a side-effect. Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but they are close cousins. SEO is about ranking pages on a SERP. AEO is about getting your brand named inside an answer. The technical foundations overlap almost entirely (crawlability, schema, authority, content quality), but the target output is different. In practice, a good technical SEO strategy is 80% of the way to a good AEO strategy.
Should I hire an AEO agency or do it myself?
Depends on the scale of the opportunity. If a single AI answer citing your brand is worth thousands in pipeline, hire someone who has done it. If you are running a lifestyle business with modest traffic, learn from the experts above and do it yourself. The DIY route is genuinely viable if you can put six months into it. Most businesses can’t, which is why agencies exist.
How is AEO measured?
The honest answer: imperfectly. There is no equivalent to Google Search Console for ChatGPT yet. The current stack of tools includes AI visibility trackers (Otterly, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar), manual prompt-testing across engines, and traffic segmentation by referrer. Expect this stack to evolve monthly. Anyone claiming a definitive AEO measurement framework in 2026 is probably selling one.
Which tools do AEO experts actually use?
Real answer: Ahrefs or Semrush for the SEO baseline, Screaming Frog for the crawl, one or more AI visibility trackers, a schema validator, a Wikipedia/Wikidata workflow for entity work, and a lot of manual prompting inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to see what those engines currently say about a brand or a query.
